Description

The Anua Retinol Caffeine Eye Cream is a treatment eye cream built for fine lines and morning puffiness at once. It uses retinol at a deliberately low 0.1% — appropriate for the thinnest skin on your face — alongside caffeine, six different ceramides and four peptides, in a cushioning base with squalane and shea butter.

Why eye-area retinol needs a lower dose

The skin around your eyes is roughly a third to a half the thickness of the skin on your cheeks, with fewer oil glands to buffer actives. A 0.3% face serum applied there is a reliable route to red, flaking, irritated eyelids. This cream keeps retinol at 0.1% and surrounds it with barrier support, which is the sensible way to get retinol’s benefits in an area that cannot take a strong dose.

At a glance

Size 30 g
Retinol 0.1% — a low, eye-appropriate dose
Puffiness Caffeine
Barrier Six ceramides (NP, NG, NS, AP, AS, EOP)
Firmness Copper tripeptide-1, acetyl hexapeptide-8, hexapeptide-2
Comfort Squalane, shea butter, panthenol, multiple hyaluronic acids

What each active is doing

  • Retinol 0.1% — fine lines and crepey texture, gradually, over months.
  • Caffeine — temporarily constricts blood vessels, which visibly reduces morning puffiness. The effect is real but short-lived, which is why it is a morning ingredient.
  • Six ceramides — unusually thorough barrier support, and the main reason this tolerates retinol better than a plain retinol cream would.
  • Peptides — signal for firmness and elasticity; a slow, supporting act rather than a headline.

How to use it

  1. Use a rice-grain amount for both eyes. More is not better and increases the chance of migration into the eye.
  2. Tap gently along the orbital bone with your ring finger — not right up against the lash line.
  3. Start two or three nights a week and build up as your skin adapts.
  4. Follow with moisturiser, and sunscreen in the morning.

Cautions worth reading

Wear a daily SPF such as the Zero Cast Moisturizing Finish Sunscreen while using this. It contains retinol, so it is not suitable during pregnancy or breastfeeding. Introduce it slowly, and do not use it the same night as a strong acid or a high-strength face retinol. Some watering or mild tingling on the first few uses is common; ongoing stinging, red eyelids or swelling means stop. Dark circles caused by genetics or by shadowing from bone structure will not respond to any cream — caffeine helps puffiness, not pigment you inherited.

How thin is eye skin, really?

The figure usually quoted is that eyelid skin is around 0.5 mm thick against roughly 2 mm on the cheek, and while exact measurements vary between studies, the direction is not in dispute: it is the thinnest skin on the body. Three consequences follow, and together they explain the dose. It has very few sebaceous glands, so there is little natural oil to buffer an active. It sits over a dense network of fine blood vessels, which is why fluid pools there as morning puffiness and why dark circles often show vessel colour rather than pigment. And it folds constantly — the average person blinks something like 15 to 20 times a minute, so this skin flexes more than anywhere else on the face. Putting a 0.3% face retinol on that is the single most common route to red, flaking eyelids, which is why the Anua Retinol Caffeine Eye Cream holds retinol at 0.1% and surrounds it with six ceramides. Eye cream or face serum?

Use the Anua Retinol Caffeine Eye Cream around the eyes and the Anua Retinol 0.3% + Niacin Renewing Serum on the rest of the face. The concentrations and the base textures are matched to very different skin thicknesses, and swapping them is the most common way people end up irritated. Many people use both, on the same nights. Frequently asked questions

Will the Anua Retinol Caffeine Eye Cream help dark circles?

It helps puffiness and crepey texture. Circles caused by pigment or bone structure will not shift with any topical cream.

Can I use it every night?

Build up to it. Start with two or three nights a week for the first fortnight.

Can I use it in the morning?

Caffeine works well in the morning for puffiness, but retinol is best at night. Night use is the simpler choice.

Is it safe in pregnancy?

No. It contains retinol, which is not recommended during pregnancy or breastfeeding.

Can I use it on my eyelids?

Stay on the orbital bone. Applying retinol directly to the lid is a common cause of irritation.
